Nick Mattson, the new service manager for Thousand Oaks Toyota, was welcomed to the meeting.Chad Stangeland In person lab status during COVID-19Temporary schedule changes. The Automotive Department transitioned to remote instruction in March 2020 due to school closure. Over the summer the 51AVƵ Automotive Department worked with Toyota T-Ten Instructor Community on how to run safe labs. The T-Ten Instructor Community developed a 22 page document on how to run safe labs during the Covid-19 outbreak. The plan was presented to the college administration, but due to additional health concerns the document was extended to 79 pages. The automotive department had to ensure that students were not missing labs, so modifications were made in scheduling. The number of students working in the lab at one time was reduced from 60 to 30. Instructors are available in the lab from 7:30 a.m. 8:00 p.m. Monday Thursday. Instructors are in the lab from 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. The lecture portion of the class is entirely online. Students are not required to log in at a specific time for the online lecture class. Chad Stangeland Mentoring/Career Advancement Plans The dealership were ask to let the automotive department know how the student mentoring program is progressing.Chad will send out updated pay plan and advancement plan to dealerships. Chad will contact dealers to find out how many technicians they need.Chad Stangeland Virtual Recruiting taking place now throughout the spring T-Ten Instructor Community Team of seven members developed a virtual recruiting program over a 10 week period and distributed it to 35 colleges. Virtual Recruiting is a challenge because student enrollments are down 16% for freshmen. T-Ten students are down 30%. Some automotive classes are only online. A key component of virtual recruiting is to have dealerships participate. The goal is to recruit high school students before they choose other majors. Dealership representatives are invited to volunteer to help with virtual recruiting. High school students are able to use eLearning textbooks. Chad will contact dealers who want to participate in Virtual Recruiting. Will ask dealer how many they want to recruit. Chad will fill spots depending where. Chad Stangeland, Scott Sandford General Program UpdatesThe Toyota TECS Program began last year. The program is available to both high school and college students. The program helps dealerships partner and build relationships with schools to recruit students for the T-Ten Program. The Toyota TECS Program gives students access to eight eLearning modules that are required for the Maintenance Certification. The students are given twelve months to access, and instructors have access for twenty-four months. If students do not complete the modules in time the instructors can extend their time. ASE Entry Level Certification allows access to ASE testing. Students are allowed two attempts at an ASE exam during one semester. This gives the Automotive Department the ability to pre-test students. Students get a one year certification that demonstrates that they are entry level. The test is a motivation tool and step stool for students to move to the next level of taking the professional ASE Exam. The tests are no cost to the students, but are a cost to the school. The advisory board discussed and agreed that students in this program are more inclined to be hired in a dealership. ASE Entry Level Certification is available to accredited and non-accredited programs for purchase. A vote was taken and advisory board voted to go forward with implementing at the college. Russell Gardner New Curriculum Hybrid Course/071 Credit Russell GardnerBudget/Program UpdatesThe Automotive Department has not received a lot of funding this school year. There are no large plans for the Automotive Department. Funding sources: The Instructional Supplies Budget is supplied by state lottery funds. Perkins Funds were allocated to purchase NC3 Certification Kit and workstation supplies. A new 40% Instructional Lab Tech was recently hired. Robert Balarama, the Instructional Lab Tech, will be retiring in December. The automotive department will be hiring a replacement. The Automotive Technology Department will change to Automotive Career Education Program. This name change will provide more support in lab hours, adding more hours to the program. Since there is a need for a Smog Technician License a Smog Curriculum will be added to the Automotive Program.Eric IrwinProgram Review/Public Forum/No comment during Public Forum.
