Head coach Steve Mooshagian accepted the American Community College Football Coaches Association鈥檚 national Coach of the Year Award in San Antonio earlier this year.
Mooshagian, who guided the Pirates to their first appearance in the CCCAA state championship game in December, will also receive the Southern California Coach of the Year award during the state coaches association鈥檚 annual meeting next weekend in Visalia.
鈥淚t really doesn鈥檛 surprise me,鈥 Ventura offensive lineman Tyler Orsini said. 鈥淚 love Moose. 鈥 He鈥檚 a hell of a coach.鈥
VC (11-2) won at Riverside, 31-21, in the Southern California championship on Nov. 24 before falling, 40-35, in a wild CCCAA state championship in Sacramento on Dec. 8.
鈥淚 kind of thought to myself, 鈥楪ood they selected it before the state game,鈥 鈥 Mooshagian joked. 鈥淚t鈥檚 blown me away, really.鈥
Mooshagian (70-30) also passed Dick James on Nov. 3 to become the program鈥檚 all-time winningest coach. He鈥檚 70-30 (.700) in nine seasons in Ventura.
